Former Mercedes-Benz works racing driver Ewy Baroness von Korff-Rosqvist passed away on July 4, 2024, at the age of 94. Marcus Breitschwerdt, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Heritage GmbH, stated, “Mercedes-Benz will always remember this extraordinary woman and her achievements and honour her memory.”
Born Ewy Jensson on August 3, 1929, in Stora Herrestad (Ystad, southern Sweden), Ewy was the only girl among five children. She trained as a veterinary assistant and, while working in this profession, honed her driving skills on narrow dirt roads in a Mercedes-Benz Type 170 S.
In 1954, Ewy married motorsport enthusiast engineer Yngve Rosqvist and began participating in rallies. She made her debut in the Midnight Sun Rally in 1956 and went on to win several women’s cups in European rallies. In 1960, she signed a contract as a works driver for Volvo, and in 1962, she joined the Mercedes-Benz works racing team.
Ewy and co-driver Ursula Wirth achieved significant success, including winning the 1962 Argentinian Touring Car Grand Prix with the fastest times on all stages. She continued to secure top positions in various rallies until her retirement in 1964.
After retiring, Ewy served as a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz, and in 2019, a short film titled “Ewy Rosqvist: An Unexpected Champion” was released, highlighting her achievements.
