OpenAI and Los Alamos National Laboratory announce bioscience research partnership

OpenAI and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are collaborating to evaluate the safe use of multimodal AI models in laboratory settings to advance bioscientific research. This partnership aims to understand and mitigate the risks associated with AI in bioscience labs.

A recent White House Executive Order mandates the U.S. Department of Energy’s national labs to evaluate the capabilities of frontier AI models, including biological capabilities. This effort is significant as it aims to understand how AI can enhance scientific research while ensuring safety.

Mira Murati, OpenAI’s CTO, stated, “This partnership is a natural progression in our mission to advance scientific research while understanding and mitigating risks.”

The evaluation study will assess how GPT-4o’s multimodal capabilities (vision and voice) can assist in performing physical laboratory tasks. The study aims to contribute to state-of-the-art research on AI biosecurity evaluations.
