Audi Develops Box to Protect Electric Vehicle Chargers from Salt Damage, Completes Installation of Two Chargers in Yakushima

Tokyo, July 8, 2024 – Audi Japan (Brand Director: Matthias Schaepers) has developed a protective box to prevent salt damage to electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed by the sea. The first two 8kW normal chargers equipped with these boxes have been installed at THE HOTEL YAKUSHIMA Ocean & Forest in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Salt in sea air can corrode and deteriorate electrical equipment, causing malfunctions. To address this, Audi developed a box made of highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel (SUS304) and coated with a special paint to protect the chargers from salt damage. The box also features an opening for the charging cable, allowing the door to remain closed during charging, thus maintaining convenience.

This initiative is based on a comprehensive partnership agreement signed in July 2023 with Yakushima Town and Fahren Kyushu Co., Ltd., an Audi authorized dealer. Audi aims to enhance EV convenience in Yakushima and is also advancing its electrification strategy by expanding the installation of chargers nationwide.
