In 2020, NIO’s digital systems team started developing their own operating system, “SkyOS Tianshu,” to avoid dependency on suppliers. Initially, they faced issues with a black-box module supplied by an Italian company, which required time and resources to resolve. This experience underscored the importance of managing software in-house and independently controlling the vehicle’s digital systems. By 2024, NIO successfully replaced AUTOSAR and built a fully proprietary vehicle operating system.
